In cooperation with UN ESCAP(Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), the Ministry of Environment holds the Asian and Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting (RPM) for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, in Seoul from October 19 to 20.


Commemorating the 20th year since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held in 1992, Rio+20 is held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from June 4 to 6, 2012. As one of the most important conferences of this century, the conference will become an opportunity to evaluate the progress with regard to sustainable development for the past two decades and discuss ways to globally respond to crisis in the field of environment, resources and economy.

At the preparatory meeting, statements of 62 ESCAP member countries of the Asian and the Pacific region will be made on the agenda of Rio+2. Participants in the meeting include Mr. Sha Zukang, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Chung Rae-kwon, Director of Environment and Sustainable Development Division, Yang Soo-gil, President of the Presidential Committee on Green Growth and ministers from Thailand, Samoa and Congo, etc.


Declaring low carbon green growth as a new national strategy in 2008, the Korean government has made efforts to realize sustainable development and green economy through green growth. At the meeting, the Korean government plans to emphasize that low carbon green growth is the most proper strategy to realize green economy through preserving environment and natural resources and maximizing energy efficiency. During the meeting period, the Ministry of Environment will have a bilateral meeting with Kazakhstan and Thailand to discuss cooperation projects for environmental preservation. In addition, presentations on Korea's low carbon green growth policies will be given and good cases will be introduced at a side event.
